"Students with learning difficulties are graduating from school barely able to read or write but educators, governments and scientists are at a loss over how to deal with the problem." In our education system "primary school teachers undertake a four-year teaching degree and though many do a minor in inclusive education, they are not equipped with the skills to deal with high-need students." "High school teachers are even less prepared"
There are experts that parents can turn to to help their children but finding the right one is challenging.

With Human Rights Day coming up in less than a week this story from the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights reminds us that everyone deserves the right to achieve as much as they can.We should provide them with the best opportunities to achieve their best and this is behind a lot of momentum in the area of inclusive education.

Positive behavioral interventions and supports

The UNH Institute on Disability's National Center on Inclusive Education has a 10 minute preview of a film that looks at the inclusion of students with emotional/behavioral challenges through positive behavioral interventions and supports. Though brief it is intriguing and well worth viewing.

Summary of the Profile of Inclusive Teachers

'In Europe, demands on schools and teachers have become increasingly complex. Schools are expected to deal effectively with diverse learner backgrounds, to be sensitive to culture and gender issues, to promote tolerance and social cohesion, as well as to keep up-to-date with new teaching techniques and technologies. This has made teacher education for inclusion a top priority in many European countries.
In March, 2011, UNESCO-IBE participated in discussions as part of a study visit aimed to validate a European profile of inclusive teachers' competencies, that took place at the University of Stavanger in Norway. In particular, project experts considered 'the relevance of the profile for teacher education policy reform, with teacher educators, student teachers, novice teachers and mentors'.
'It is hoped that the profile will contribute to the discussions around inclusive teacher training in Europe and can be used as a means of furthering debate and investigation at the national and regional level.'

CALL TO ACTION: Making Gifted Education Relevant Today

This title is actually the title of a blog post by Deborah Mersino from the USA. Her post looks at what she feels is the current state of gifted education in the US. She suggests that a new push is needed to get things rolling again, to provide better resources and training for all educators. It needs to be for all.
